Mangaluru: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) state president Abdul Majeed Mysore, condemning the increase in incidences of moral policing in Dakshina Kannada district, has urged the opposition parties in the assembly, to raise the issue, and have a serious discussion, during the ongoing legislative session.
He told reporters on Wednesday, that there is a need to find a permanent solution to the issue. “The state government should own the responsibility for the increase in moral policing incidents. If no action is taken, the law and order situation will worsen in the district,” he claimed.
Majeed urged the Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police and Mangaluru city police commissioner to take stringent action against those who take the law into their hands, in the name of moral policing.
“A special force should be constituted, to contain such ‘immoral goondaism,’ and the intelligence wing should be strengthened in the district. The increase in the incidents of moral policing will tarnish the image of the district, which is known as an education hub and tourist destination. This in turn will have an impact on investments,” he noted .
He said the police department should register suo motu cases against those involved in moral policing, or attempting to disrupt communal harmony in the district. “Home Minister Araga Jnanendra has stated that 31 cases were reported in the last two years. There are several incidents that go unreported,” he said.
To a query on the Bajrang Dal allegedly trying to disrupt New Year celebrations, he said that the police department should take them into preventive custody.
SDPI state general secretary Ashraf Machar alleged that they have noticed a flex aimed at disrupting communal harmony in Puttur. “Why is the police silent on it? If members of different faiths begin mounting flexes to counter the already existing flex, then what will happen to the district? The police must act without heeding to any kind of pressure,” he said.
SDPI district general secretary Anwar Sadat Bajathoor alleged that the bus drivers and conductors inform the outfits about people from different faiths travelling together in the bus. The victims are threatened against filing a case, and only one community is targeted, he said.
