Mangaluru: 3,000 saplings to be planted in city

Mangaluru: As part of the World Environment Day celebration, the Forest Department is planning to plant over 3,000 saplings under its ‘urban greening’ scheme before the end of June.

The saplings will be planted on the roadside to beatify the city and to increase the green cover. Jackfruit, mango, teak wood among others will be planted. Over one lakh saplings were kept at Padeel nursery for the purpose.

The department has already disbursed over 4,500 saplings to various institutions and associations like MRPL, MCF, Lions and Rotary. Under ‘Krishi Aranya Protsaha Yojane’ (Agriculture-Forest Encouragement scheme), the department provides various varieties of saplings to farmers and pays a support price of Rs 45 for each sapling.

Laksha Vruksha Campaign

The Forest Department is planning to hold a state-wide programme ‘Laksha Vruksha campaign’ in which it intended to plant over a crore saplings in the state. Around 2 lakh saplings will be planted in the Mangaluru division alone. The week-long campaign will start from July 2 and end on July 8.

World Environment Day

The District Legal Services Authority in association with the Forest Department, Mangaluru division, celebrated World Environment Day by planting saplings on the Kadri Park Road on Sunday.

Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling. First Additional District and Sessions Judge C M Joshi, Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge D T Puttaranga Swamy, Third Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Pushpanjali Devi, Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Bhavani Nerale, Senior Civil Judge Mallana Gowda, Deputy Conservator of Forests K T Hanumanthappa, Range Forest officer Sridhar among others were present.
