Young scientists exhibit talent at science fair in Jamboree

Mangaluru: A mixture of custard apple leaf, neem leaf and dry chilies can eliminate pests attacking plants; pressure sensors can save electricity by turning on lamp only when climbing the stairs and spray made from Agnimatana plant leaves can keep flies away were some scientific solutions emerged when students spared a thought for their day-to-day problems.

Hundreds of such models have created a world of wonder at the International Cultural Jamboree in Moodbidri.

The science fair, organised as part of the Jamboree on Alva’s Education campus, has exposed the talents of ‘young scientists’. Shashank, from Vivekananda High School in Puttur, explaining his project, said a mixture of custard apple, neem leaves and chillies in equal proportion will help in checking pests.

Huzait Sheikh of Christ King School, Karkala, dreams of building a ‘smart green house’. He has designed a lamp that lights up with the help of pressure sensors installed in the stairs.

The clothes, drying on the ceiling of his ‘dream house’, do not get wet even when it rains. He has developed a circuit that closes the ceiling when it rains. They also know how to pump water automatically as soon as the paddy is dry. Praneet Moras, from the Holy Redeemer English Medium School in Belthangady, has designed a dream house with a door that closes to sound.

Mohammad Anas and Nishan Shetty, students of the Moodbidri Rotary School, have devised a new way of using kitchen waste water for hydroponics. A filter made of charcoal, sand, gravel and cotton helps to filter water. If appropriate amount of cow urine and dung is mixed with filtered water, high yield can be obtained in vegetables cultivated using the method of hydroponics.

‘’There are various models from ISRO, Aeronautical Development Agency, and other central research institutes. The models by high school, primary, engineering, PU college students and startups have been creating awareness on science,’’ science mela convener Dr Yuvaraj said.

On noticing accidents caused by potholes on the road, the students of Canara Engineering College—Vikas M, Sujith K, Bhagyasri M and Swaroopa C K, under the guidance of their lecturer Pavithra H M, have developed an app to help motorists to notice potholes well in advance.

The passengers can get information about quality of roads in advance with help of the app.
