Bhatkal condemns Pahalgam terror attack; Questions security lapses, communal narratives, and demands unbiased probe

Bhatkal: The horrific terrorist attack that struck Pahalgam, Kashmir, on Tuesday—claiming the lives of 26 innocent tourists—has sparked widespread condemnation across Bhatkal’s political and social spectrum. Local leaders have raised serious questions about the apparent security lapses in such a sensitive and high-tourism area. They also voiced concern over attempts by sections of the media and political establishment to communalize the tragedy, and demanded swift and severe punishment for the perpetrators following a transparent investigation.

Addressing a press conference, Bhatkal Block Congress President Venkatesh Naik described the attack as a grave act of terror and criticized the lack of adequate security arrangements. He emphasized that the attack did not take place near an international border but deep within Indian territory, exposing a troubling failure in internal security.

Congress leaders revealed that more than 2,000 tourists were present at the site during the attack. While 26 people lost their lives, they praised local Kashmiri Muslims who stepped in to rescue and shelter many others—an act they described as a powerful example of humanity and solidarity. They expressed disappointment over the communal lens through which some media houses and social media users have portrayed the incident, warning that such narratives only deepen division and hatred. The Congress leaders reiterated the need for an impartial probe and strict action against those responsible.

Separately, Bhatkal’s prominent socio-political organization, Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem, also condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a heinous and inhumane act that has no place in any civilized society. The Tanzeem’s General Secretary, Abdul Raqeeb M.J. Nadvi, held a press conference in which he blamed the central government and the Ministry of Home Affairs for a significant security lapse. He argued that an incident of this magnitude in a region like Kashmir—known for heightened security—demonstrates the government’s failure in safeguarding citizens.

Nadvi stressed that ensuring the safety of tourists and civilians is a fundamental responsibility of the government. He called the absence of effective security at a location frequented by thousands of visitors deeply alarming. He urged citizens to unite against terrorism and to work collectively towards building a peaceful and just society.

The Tanzeem called for an immediate and unbiased investigation, stringent action against the terrorists, and comprehensive support for the victims' families. The organization also highlighted the need to monitor those who are exploiting this tragedy to spread communal hatred. It condemned the controversial remarks made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, labeling them irresponsible and dangerous to national unity.

Quoting the Qur'an, Nadvi said, “Whoever kills a single innocent life, it is as if he has killed all of humanity.” He denounced the baseless propaganda targeting Muslims in the wake of the attack and reiterated that terrorism has no religion. Nadvi emphasized that the fight against terrorism requires national unity, beyond all divisions of faith or community.

The Tanzeem appealed to all segments of society to rise above religious and communal lines, unite against terrorism, and collectively promote peace, harmony, and national unity.
