Karwar: The World Hydrographic Day was observed at the Naval Base here on Tuesday. The day provides an opportunity to increase public awareness about the vital role hydrography plays in everyone’s life.

The theme for this year’s World Hydrography Day, which was also the 95th anniversary of the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO), was ‘Hydrography-the key to well-managed seas and waterways’. As part of World Hydrography Day, a presentation on hydrography was conducted to spread awareness on the subject. The audience was informed about the basic organisation and functioning of the Indian Naval Hydrographic Department.

The presentation also highlighted the unique surveying capabilities of INS Makar, the only Survey Vessel in Karnataka naval area. Students from various schools of Karwar visited INS Makar where a guided tour was organised for them. They were made to understand the basic role and operations of survey equipment fitted onboard.
