Bhatkal: 1.20 lakh kilograms of rice distributed among 1,859 families on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr

Bhatkal — On the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, a remarkable welfare initiative was carried out in Bhatkal and surrounding areas, where a total of 1,20,000 kilograms of rice was distributed among 1,859 deserving families. This was confirmed by the Convener of the Central Fitra Committee, Maulana Mohammed Ilyas Jakati Nadwi.

Maulana Ilyas explained that to facilitate the large-scale distribution, 58 zones were established across Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Shirur, and nearby regions. Fitra (charity) rice, collected from various localities, was systematically distributed to the needy. As in previous years, the initiative received generous support from Bhatkali Muslim communities residing abroad, particularly in the Gulf countries, who contributed substantial quantities of rice to this noble cause.

The rice was distributed not only in various parts of Bhatkal but also in nearby areas, including Shirur, Honnavar, Kumta, and Ankola. Notably, for the past three years, the Sharavathi belt—comprising regions like Gersuppa, Herangadi, and Saralgi—has also been included in the distribution network. On average, each family received 50 kilograms of rice, while some larger, underprivileged, or differently-abled families were provided up to a quintal (100 kg). Additionally, for the fourth consecutive year, each family received 5 kilograms of premium Basmati rice as part of the fitra package.

Maulana further noted that this community-wide fitra distribution initiative has been ongoing in Bhatkal for the past 40 years and continues to grow stronger each year. Key contributions come from overseas Bhatkali organizations, local youth groups, sports centers, and religious scholars, who actively participate and support this humanitarian mission.

To review the execution of this large-scale project and strengthen it for the future, a special Eid-Milan session was recently held under the auspices of Cosmos Sports Center. The event took place at the Mohkama Shariah Hall, adjacent to the Khalifa Jamia Masjid in Bhatkal. It was attended by office-bearers of Gulf-based Bhatkali Jamaats, representatives and executives of local educational and social institutions, active community members, and scholars, who all deliberated on ways to further improve the effectiveness of the fitra distribution process.
