Heavy rains continue to batter Bengaluru; Woman dies after compound wall collapses

Bengaluru: Continuous torrential rains over the past week have thrown life out of gear in Karnataka's capital, Bengaluru. In a tragic incident on Monday morning, a 35-year-old woman lost her life after a compound wall collapsed on her in the Mahadevapura area of East Bengaluru.

The deceased has been identified as Shashikala, a native of Yadgir who was working as a domestic help in the city. According to eyewitnesses, she was sweeping the premises around 7 a.m. when a private company's compound wall suddenly collapsed on her, killing her on the spot. Fire and emergency teams rushed to the scene and recovered her body from the debris.

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc across various parts of the city, flooding several low-lying areas, severely disrupting traffic, and uprooting trees. In many places, walls and buildings have been damaged due to continuous rainfall, causing panic among residents.

Reacting to the situation, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and stated that he is personally monitoring the affected areas and inspecting the BBMP war room. He acknowledged that the current problems are not new but are the result of years of negligence by successive governments. He assured that the state government is working on long-term and sustainable solutions to address the crisis.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the coming days, prompting authorities to urge residents to take precautions and remain alert.
