Karwar: DC Lakshmi Priya instructs officials to prepare for mock drill at Kaiga nuclear plant

Karwar : All officials must be well-prepared within their respective departments to handle any possible disaster at the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant, said Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner (DC) K. Lakshmi Priya.

She was speaking while presiding over a coordination meeting at the DC office regarding the measures to be taken during the upcoming mock drill at Kaiga.

A mock drill will be conducted to assess disaster preparedness at the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant. All concerned department officials must understand their responsibilities and act diligently during the drill, she stated.

The DC instructed that the district administration should be informed well in advance about the date of the mock drill. Additionally, all concerned department officials should be given detailed guidelines before the drill to ensure proper execution.

Scientific Officer Chittaranjan of Kaiga Nuclear Plant stated that four nuclear power units are currently operational at Kaiga, while the fifth and sixth units are yet to begin functioning. He emphasized that all necessary precautionary measures have already been implemented to prevent any disasters in the area. The mock drill will be conducted to further enhance these precautions and to test the effectiveness of current emergency measures.

Shortcomings identified in previous mock drills conducted at nuclear power plants across the country have been listed, and all district officials have been urged to ensure that such lapses do not occur in the upcoming drill.

The meeting was attended by Zilla Panchayat CEO Eshwar Kandu, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sajid Mulla, Sub-Divisional Officer Kanishka, Kaiga Technical Officer Sunil, and officials from various departments.
